MOTIVATION

The Lilian Public School (LPS) began as a small initiative by a young graduate who had completed engineering and started working in Bangalore. With the help of relatives and friends, LPS was founded in the year 2008 in the small village of Rajeshwar, with an aim to provide education to the children of the village who had limited access to quality education.
The village had only one government-run school up to Grade-7 with a high student-teacher ratio of 80:1, and any child needing to attend higher grades had to travel 10 miles. The majority of the population worked on farms or as daily wage laborers, and literacy levels were very low.
The school started with just 40 students in the grade-1, but now has grown to have almost 1500+ students from Kindergarten to Grade-12 to Bachelor Degree. Despite the challenges, LPS has been successful in providing education to children and improving the literacy levels in the village. Prior to the founding of LPS, most children, especially girls, dropped out of school after grade-7 due to financial constraints, safety concerns, and low literacy rates.
After grade-10, almost all students dropped out and started supporting their parents in farms and other daily wage labor. However, LPS has been able to reverse this trend, with 100% of its grade-10 students passing with good results and some going on to pursue higher education.

LACK OF FINANCIALS

Despite the financial difficulties faced by many parents who work as day laborers or in low-paying jobs in the surrounding villages, Lilian Public School has been able to provide full or partial scholarships to about 75% of its students. This has resulted in an enrollment of over 1500 students from Kindergarten to 12th grade to Bachelor of Degree College as of January 2025. Along with providing scholarships, the school actively encourages parents to send their children to school, recognizing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and improving their future prospects.

LACK OF SAFETY

This lack of infrastructure and support made it extremely difficult for children, especially girls, to continue their education beyond 7th grade. Many parents, who themselves were illiterate, were not able to provide proper guidance and support to their children, and the absence of day-care facilities made it even harder for them to balance work and family responsibilities. As a result, most children were forced to drop out of school and start working to support their families.

LOOKING AHEAD

Zafas Education Foundation has been established to support the Lilian Institutes and promote education reform. It's especially important to provide quality education to economically disadvantaged children in India.
We are excited that Lilian Institutes is expanding to include a Pre-University College and Degree College. This will provide more opportunities for students to continue their education beyond high school.
In addition to academics, it's great to see that Lilian Institutes and ZEducation supports students in other fields like sports, farming, plantation, and vocational courses. This will give students a well-rounded education and help them develop skills for the future.
